Gutter Cleaning in 4 Easy Steps

Gutter cleaning is one of those necessary chores that most homeowners dread.  However, it is important to keep your gutters free of debris and leaves.  If your gutters become clogged it could result in serious water damage to your house.  Your gutters keep water from collecting on the roof and channel the water away from the house.  If water collects it can cause rot and also foundation problems.  Therefore regular gutter cleaning is absolutely necessary to help prevent water damage to your home.

Gutter cleaning can either be hired out or you can climb up on a ladder and do your own gutter cleaning.  Gutter cleaning isn’t too difficult or time consuming, so you will have to weigh the cost of having a professional do it versus the free time you have to invest.

If you decide to do the gutter cleaning yourself, you will want to prepare your necessary materials ahead of time.  You will need a sturdy ladder, plastic garbage or lawn bags, buckets, a garden hose, a garden trowel or something to scoop up leaves and debris with, and a plumber’s snake or piece of wire.

Step 1. Before you climb up on the roof, make sure your ladder is secure and that it is not leaning against any of the downspouts.  It is a good idea to have someone hold the ladder for you while you are on the roof

Step 2. Next, remove the leaves and loose debris out of the downspouts using a garden trowel or gutter scoop.  Place the debris in a bucket or plastic garbage bag.

Step 3.  For any caked on dirt or debris, use a garden hose or pitcher of water to loosen and then scoop out into your bucket or plastic garbage bag.

Step 4.  Check the downspouts for any clogs and then gently wash them out with a garden hose.  Another method of unclogging the gutters is to use a plumber’s snake or piece of wire to clear about the drains.

It is important to do your guttering cleaning on a regular basis.   Gutter cleaning should be done in both the fall and spring and you should check your downspouts for clogs on a regular basis.  You can always hire someone to do the gutter cleaning for you if you don’t have the time or dont want to risk falling from your house and injuring yourself.  Our recomended gutter cleaner in danvers ma is David Ness jr construction.
